Abed Kobeissy is a Beirut-based musician, composer, and producer working across contemporary music, performance, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Centering the buzuq within experimental and contemporary contexts, his work explores an unapologetically confused present-day Levant, drawing from urban sonic environments.
His work spans solo performances, collaborative projects, and original compositions for theater, and film. Since 2014, he has developed an extensive body of work for contemporary dance, notably through long-term collaborations with choreographer Ali Chahrour and as co-creator and composer with choreographer Stephanie Kayal.
Kobeissy’s works have been presented internationally since 2013. He has received numerous commissions in music composition and research, including from The Berlin Biennale & The Berlin International Film Festival (2018), UNESCO (2018), CTM Music Festival Berlin (2020), and the Irtijal/Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival commission (2021).
He has released multiple albums and collaborative projects since 2017. He is co-founder of the Lebanese electroacoustic duo Two or The Dragon and the Lebanese-German beat-noise quartet Stellar Banger. He is currently preparing three forthcoming albums in collaboration with Two or The Dragon & Hala Omran, with Lynn Adib, and with Sary Moussa.
Kobeissy holds a Master’s degree in Advanced Studies on the semiotics of music in Arabic cinema and has lectured at the Lebanese American University in Beirut. He has also contributed as a juror for academic arts programs.
