“How much myth do we build into our experience of time?” The words are Don De Lillo’s, they reverberate in the theater when a white curtain is drawn downstage. How much myth do we allow into our lives? How much myth are we aware of? And which myths?”
Verwijzend naar Avery Gordons sociologische studie Ghostly Matters benadert André Lepecki het spookachtige als een kritische agent werkzaam aan de uiterste randen van de maatschappelijke en culturele intelligibiliteit, als souffleur van een aangescherpt bewustzijn, een alternatieve zintuiglijke modus. “(…) Such capacity to experience what should not belong to experience proper should not be confused with any sort of hysteria or histrionics. It is just a mode of composing perception initiated by the ghostly.”
Lilia Mestre schrikt niet terug voor ‘oneigenlijke’ manifestaties van het spookachtige, die uiteindelijk toch een goed deel van onze culturele verbeelding uitmaken. Niet het pathologische maar het histrionische trekt haar aan – we bevinden ons tenslotte in het theater. En inderdaad, wat valt er eigenlijk te tonen of zeggen over die plek waar het spookachtige gewaardeerd wordt om wat het is?
