About

°1991, lives and works in Brussels.

Mario Barrantes Espinoza is a Costa Rican-Nicaraguan artist based in Brussels. He studied theatre and dance at the National University of Costa Rica, before moving to Belgium, where he graduated from the Training Cycle and Research Studios at P.A.R.T.S.

His interest in sound, text, and audio-visual materials have led him to collaborate with artists such as François Chaignaud, Theo Mercier, Michiel Vandevelde, and Eszter Salamon, and with bands like Peaches and The Subs.

Currently he continues to develop projects as an independent artist. His work articulates dance, text and voice through the re-appropriation of elements found in pop culture and mainstream media.

Some of his work includes [A SEQUENCE III], created within the context of Bâtard Festival (BE, 2018), Drift (I) – in collaboration with Thomas Bîrzan – selected by Aerowaves Dance Across Europe (2019), and El cantar del playo or… a song is a rose is a thorn, awarded with the Roel Verniers prize by Het Theaterfestival (2020) for “creative ideas and new performing talent”.
